BMW Vision Effi cientDynamics: Vision becomes reality. In  BMW plans to
debut the BMW Vision Effi cientDynamics test model – a  + sports car featuring ground-
breaking plug-in hybrid technology that combines sports-car performance with compact-
class consumption. Powered by the latest-generation, full-hybrid system, the vehicle – in
concept form – generates a total of  hp through a  -hp, three-cylinder turbo diesel
engine with  lb-ft of torque, as well as a hybrid synchronous engine on the front axle
and fully hybrid drive system on the rear axle. With a range of up to  miles, its ratio of
performance to fuel consumption is without equal, positioning BMW as the world’s leading
manufacturer of exceptionally effi cient, sporty vehicles.

High Precision Injection
Turbocharging is traditionally known for boosting power at the expense of fuel ef񃀓 ciency.
BMW TwinPower Turbo engines with piezo direct fuel injection, however, inject gasoline at high
pressure and with extreme precision into each cylinder. And, thanks to BMW’s fast and 񃀔 exible
electronic control system, both the timing and quantity of the fuel injections can be precisely
adjusted to driving conditions. As a result, BMW vehicles achieve excellent fuel ef񃀓 ciency.
TwinPower Turbo engines
Bene񃀓 ting from BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology, both 񂢔 Series Gran Turismo engines deliver
quick acceleration while virtually eliminating turbo lag. Fuel economy is strong, as well, thanks to
precise piezo direct fuel injection.
Double-VANOS
VANOS is BMW’s valve timing system that can “steplessly” vary the points in the combustion
cycle when valves open and close. Double-VANOS refers to the fact that it operates on both the
intake and exhaust camshafts. Electronically controlled in response to engine speed, load and
temperature, VANOS reduces emissions and enhances low- to medium-speed torque, as well
as fuel ef񃀓 ciency.
񂌘 -speed
STEPTRONIC automatic transmission
The particularly smooth gear shifts of the new 񂢗 -speed automatic transmission produce greater
engine ef񃀓 ciency at every engine speed. The smoother shifts result in reduced fuel consumption.
Aerodynamics
The more smoothly that air 񃀔 ows over a vehicle, the more ef񃀓 ciently it can operate. All BMWs are
designed for a low coef񃀓 cient of aerodynamic drag, which translates into quicker acceleration,
more stable handling, quieter operation and greater fuel ef񃀓 ciency. A BMW’s integrated front
spoilers reduce the amount of air 񃀔 owing underneath, minimizing front-end lift. This allows a
BMW to hug the road at higher speeds for excellent stability.
Brake Energy Regeneration
To supply a battery with electrical energy, the generator (alternator) usually needs engine power,
which requires fuel. With Brake Energy Regeneration, the generator produces electricity when the
driver brakes or takes a foot off the accelerator. Previously unharnessed, kinetic energy is trans-
formed into electrical energy then fed into the battery, generating electricity without using fuel.
Lightweight construction
Our engineers use lightweight aluminum throughout our vehicles – in the doors, for example, or
for the suspension. BMW’s inline six-cylinder and V-񂢗 TwinPower Turbo engines are all aluminum.
Taken together, these weight savings lead to lower fuel consumption and better axle load
distribution for more agility – especially in curves.
