Spectacular: elite motorcycle racers take to the starting line at events in countries on
bikes capable of over km/h.
A BMW X M is responsible for safety in the MotoGP motorcycling championship races.
TRACK
MASTER.
Helmet on, gloves on, look dead ahead.
Sunday afternoon shortly before .,
it’s about a minute to go before the start
of motorcycle racing’s Königsclasse event.
Extreme focus. Mike Lafl uente fi xes his gaze
on the tight cluster of bikes metres in
front of his BMW X M. Two… one… zero…
The engines, each delivering about hp,
howl. Lafl uente fl oors the accelerator and the
BMW X M surges forward. Lafl uente is one
of the safety car drivers for the motorcycle
road racing world championship. In total, fi ve
BMW safety vehicles are on duty at races
in countries. In addition to the BMW X M,
there is a BMW M and, fi rst among equals,
a BMW Series M Coupé and the S RR
and HP Sport motorcycles. BMW has been
an offi cial partner for the MotoGP since .

On the fi rst lap of each race, the bikes are
followed by a BMW safety car. This is the
most dangerous lap because, at this stage,
the fi eld of drivers is grouped very closely.
One tiny slip can trigger a major pile-up. If there
is an accident, the safety car driver needs to
decide in a split second whether to radio the
race managers to interrupt the event or to
recommend continuation. If needed, he calls
for medical help and secures the incident area.
Lafl uente pushes his BMW XM to the limit
around the circular course. “This car delivers
spectacular power development. And thanks
to xDrive four-wheel-drive system, it is easy
to control even in diffi cult situations,” he says.
“The variable power distribution between the
rear wheels provided by Dynamic Performance
Control also allows precise and very dynamic
acceleration out of corners.” Nonetheless,
the bikes have a clear advantage. Although
the BMW X M with its kW is more than
twice as powerful, weighing in at ,kg, it
is times as heavy.
After around two and a half minutes, the
safety car rolls back in to the pitlane. The fi rst
lap is complete but, for the rest of the race,
car and driver remain ready. “Usually, I am
out on the track in M Dynamic mode. This
allows controlled drifting through the curves,”
Lafl uente explains. “But sometimes I switch
off the electronic control system completely.
That way, I can experience the enormous
power of the BMW X M without any restraint.
The performance of this car is outstanding.
And while it may not have been designed as a
racing car, it has mastered all of the MotoGP
tracks with fl ying colours.”
