High levels of driving stability and agility are a given in BMW M models.
But, considering their size, the fact that these values are seen in the
BMW X M and BMW X M almost de es belief. It all comes down to an
intelligent interplay of M-speci c chassis technologies. This allows for
unrivalled driving dynamics, precision and safety even at the physical limit.
The BMW X M and the BMW X M are the rst M models ever to feature
the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. This distributes drive power
exibly between the front and rear axle to ensure the greatest possible
traction and directional stability. Set up for M models speci cally with
a rear-drive bias in dynamic driving situations, xDrive even enables
controlled drifting.
A sporty driving style is also supported in both models by Dynamic
Performance Control, tted as standard. This optimally divides torque
between the rear wheels depending on the driving situation. It means
that, particularly during cornering, more power is transferred to the
road and handling and tracking are further stabilised. One of the most
astonishing driving characteristics, when you consider the dimensions of
these vehicles, is that each can handle fast cornering and sudden braking
or acceleration with virtually no movement of the car body. This is thanks
to the chassis control system Adaptive Drive – the combination of roll
stabilisation (Dynamic Drive) and Electronic Damper Control (EDC).
With its M-speci c technology – which, for instance, lowers the chassis by
mm – Adaptive Drive allows for unrivalled steering precision and tracking
stability. As the load alteration effect is palpably reduced, Adaptive Drive
noticeably increases ride comfort and safety, too. You can also adjust
numerous settings individually – for example, damper control, together
with M Servotronic, via the EDC button on the gear lever, and stability
control via a switch in the centre console. In addition, the M Drive button
on the steering wheel allows you to call up pre-programmed vehicle
con gurations which support either very sporty or more comfortable
driving. One of them is M Dynamic mode. This allows for maximum lateral
and longitudinal dynamics. Here, the control functions of Dynamic
Stability Control (DSC) are signi cantly delayed and will only intervene
to stabilise the car in critical situations.
The lightweight high-performance brake system is remarkable for its
extremely short stopping distances and high stability. Braking power can
be nely applied and the system responds to brake commands with
total precision. Even during extremely dynamic driving, the deceleration
values are impressive.
