BMW X M in the environmental wind tunnel: snow storms at the press of a button.
Heat, cold, sun, rain, snow – in the Energy and Environmental
Test Centre of the BMW Group, a vehicle can drive through all
the world’s climate zones in just one day.
AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHT HOURS.

Secured: during the evaluation, the vehicle
is anchored to the test bed (left). Solarium:
high-power radiant lamps in the ceiling
simulate strong sunshine.
A BMW X M in a snowstorm. Minute snow-
powder crystals rush past at well over km/h,
they sweep over the windscreen and whistle
through the wheel arches. The vehicle’s wheels
turn at terri c speed. And yet the BMW X M
doesn’t move a single metre forward.
In the Energy and Environmental Test Centre
(EVZ) of the BMW Group, which opened in
spring , reality is turned upside down. It is
not the car that moves, but the environment.
The BMW X M is locked down to the test
bed, its wheels driven by the rollers on which
it stands. And whether it’s the climatic, thermal
or environmental wind tunnel, or it’s the altitude
or cold-testing chamber, in the EVZ, the road is
right there in the laboratory. Likewise, whatever
weather may be required. Heat, cold, sun, rain
and snow are all available at the press of a
button. Enormous fans, meanwhile, can create
a ferocious airstream of up to km/h.
The pay-off. Many tests that involved engineers,
mechanics, prototypes and equipment travelling
to the world’s hot and cold regions and areas
of dry desert and tropical humidity, can now be
done at the Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ)
of the BMW Group in Munich. Which also
happens to be right next to the six-storey,
, square metre EVZ. This saves time
and money and protects the environment by
eliminating many long-distance journeys.
For the snowstorm test, the crew would have
previously travelled to Scandinavia or Alaska.
Today it can be done at home. This is when
investigations are carried out to see if ne
snow crystals can penetrate the engine’s air
intake system and block the air lter, thus
leading to engine failure due to lack of air. Now
it’s possible to create a blizzard even at the
height of summer and reproduce it frequently
and under precisely the same conditions.
More than  test drives are stored with every
detail in the EVZ. From stop-go traf c in the
city and top speeds on the autobahn, through
to journeys at a height of , metres in the
altitude chamber. And in all weathers and
temperatures from minus  to plus  degrees
centigrade. But it’s not just the air intake system
and engine of the BMW X M that need to be
capable of coping with extremes. The same is
true of everything from the engine control unit
and the brakes to the air conditioning unit.
Weeks, months and thousands of miles are no
longer always required. Thanks to the ve test
beds in the unique Energy and Environmental
Test Centre, a vehicle can drive through all the
climatic zones of the world in just eight hours.
